Speech Pathologyy

Our Speech Pathologists (also known as speech therapists, SP's) provide support for individuals with communication, social interaction and swallowing difficulties. Their role is to help people improve their ability to communicate, understand language (verbal and non verbal), and manage eating and drinking issues, to enhance their participation in everyday life. 

Therapy & Skill Development

 Our Speech pathologists provide therapy and interventions to help participants:

  • Develop or improve speech and language skills.
  • Enhance understanding and expression of language.
  • Learn techniques to help with swallowing and feeding.

Therapy may be provided in various settings such as clinics, homes, schools, or community centers.

Communication Support

 Speech pathologists help people with various communication issues, such as:

  • Speech production (articulation, clarity).
  • Language comprehension (understanding spoken or written language).
  • Language expression (putting thoughts into words, forming sentences).
  • Social communication skills (conversation, body language, and social cues).

To develop strategies to improve communication abilities, using techniques like sign language, speech exercises, or using technology-assisted communication devices.

Assessment

Our Speech pathologists conduct thorough assessments to identify:

  • Speech and language delays.
  • Swallowing disorders (dysphagia).
  • Voice issues (e.g., hoarseness or breathiness).
  • Cognitive-communication disorders (e.g., memory or attention issues related to communication).

These assessments lead to personalized therapy goals and strategies.habilitation program is designed to help patients regain mobility and independence after a stroke. We provide customized treatment plans that include exercises, adaptive equipment, and education on how to prevent future strokes.

Swallowing and Eating

 For people experiencing difficulties with swallowing or feeding, our speech pathologists can provide assessments and interventions to help:

  • Prevent choking.
  • Improve safety and effectiveness in eating and drinking.
  • Recommend specific techniques and food modifications (e.g., thickening liquids).

They also help develop strategies for managing these difficulties in social and everyday settings.

Assistive Technology (AT) for Communication

In some cases, speech pathologists help people access and use assistive technology (AT), such as:

  • Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices: Devices that help individuals communicate when they can’t speak, including speech-generating devices, communication boards, or apps.

  1. Speech apps: Mobile applications that assist in communication or language development.

Family and Caregiver Support

Speech pathologists also educate and train families and caregivers to support the individual in improving their communication and swallowing skills at home and in daily life. This may include strategies for:

  • Encouraging communication.
  • Understanding and using the recommended therapy techniques.
  • Managing mealtime routines.
